Outside Play

When kids participate in a lot of organized and structured activities, it can be difficult for them to be satisfied with unstructured time. Encourage your children and your family to write up a “Wish List” of things to do in your free time.  Just hanging out leads to play!

What to do in your own Backyard:

  • Find time to just “hang out”
  • Do a chore together (clean the garage, rake leaves)
  • Play with your children
  • Teach them a new skill
  • Lay in the grass and look at the clouds, or roll over and look for 4 leaf clovers
  • Plant and tend a garden together
  • Put on your own Backyard Olympics
  • Build a Campfire, roast marshmallows, sing songs
  • Go for a walk
  • Consider it “play” time, rather than “exercise” time (it’s more fun!)
  • Plan a surprise outing
  • Organize a family project
